How To Get “The Shot” with Mogo Money

How To Get The Shot

I field many questions about what I do but for some reason as of late most of the intrigue is around my Instagram. It’s a bit, odd but it seems as though everyone, regardless whether they are in my industry or not, appears to be interested in curating the perfect “grid”. I wish I could say that it’s an effortless task and that not much thought goes into the images I post, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I mean, it does sound ridiculous but with Instagram now having more than 300 million users (roughly the population of the United States), there are some crazy super users such as myself, who go out of their way to create an aesthetically pleasing grid layout.

My squad (who is also equally as obsessive about their Instagram content) and I recently attended Mogo Money’s first influencer event here in Toronto hosted by Christian Thompson of ChristianConfidential.com with one goal in mind – to capture dope motion shots at Skyzone Trampoline in collaboration with Kastor & Pollux. Who is Mogo? In short, a financial institution for our generation based out of Vancouver who is helping it’s customers become more conscious with their spending habits via pre-paid credit cards in addition to low interest rates for personal loans. Quite brilliant in my opinion that they are teaching younger folk to be fiscally responsible while still using their products. The best part about Mogo is #MogoPerks, a growing community where the brand has been introducing cool events, activations and other exclusive card holder benefits.

Without getting too technical and obsessive, here are some of the basics for improving your Instagram grid:

1. Do NOT use the Instagram app to take your photos.

This sounds elementary but I see it more often than you may think. I actually cringe when I see someone attempting to capture an image through the app’s camera as it doesn’t have the same functions as your phone’s camera; such as “zoom” and the “grid feature” – both help you to compose your photo better. If you have an iPhone, try to deliberately underexpose your shots to counter against the phone’s tendency to blow out some parts of the image. Last but not least, within the phone’s camera, you are also able to play with the focus to create a greater sense of depth before posting to Instagram.

2. Pay attention to composition.

Sure, symmetrical images are really appealing but majority of images are symmetrical. You don’t have to limit yourself by putting your subject in the middle of the frame all the time. It can sometimes create a boring with no sense of direction or energy. Try thinking “outside the box” (no pun intended) and attempt the rule of thirds. This form of photography technique means the frame is broken up into evenly into three horizontal or vertical sections with the subject oriented within these imaginary lines – and you will be surprised it results in a well balanced frame.

3. Hire a photographer.

If you are looking to enter into this crazy world of blogging, what you need to understand right away is “Content is King”. Having amazing imagery is what sometimes can set you apart from your peers. Although I am pretty decent working with my iPhone camera, I do have to call on some heavy hitter photogs at times to help me execute a vision or concept – especially when movement is involved.

The Kastor & Pollux team understands this all too well and hired famed photography duo Othello Grey and Neva Wireko to shoot movement images of our crew as we bounced around at Skyzone, which was probably the most fun I have had in years. Please do me and yourself a favour and check out their respective Instagram’s immediately. They are brilliant. The right photographer can execute an image effectively by understanding how to use light and the surroundings to ensure you get the perfect photo. More importantly, their post work and editing can bring a photo from 0 to 100 real quick.

4. Learn to edit like a pro.

Speaking of editing…capturing a good raw photo is important of course but everything lies in the edit my friend. Yes, Instagram has had several updates over the last few years and have added editing options that you can use prior to posting, but please do not rely on these. Every good blogger has their go-to editing apps that they literally swear by, I sure do! It has taken me longer than I would like to admit to develop an editing formula to create the aesthetic you currently see on my grid. I prefer to post groups of images within the same tones and colours, leaning towards bright, clean and slightly de-saturated shots. My fave editing apps right now – 1) VSCO 2) Photoshop Express and 3) FaceTune and 4) Snapseed. VSCO is probably the most important in my editing arsenal because I also pre-plan my Instagram posts there. By mirroring my grid within VSCO, I can strategically plan what to post next for the most optimal aesthetically pleasing appearance.

5. Learn to love light.

Good light can actually do wonders, trust me! Even the most novice of photographers can produce a great image with natural light. The type of ideal lighting you need really depends on the type of image being shot and more importantly whether it’s a shot being taken indoors or outdoors. For example, with outdoor photography, you may hear of people speak of the “Magic Hour”  or the Golden Hour which refers to that sliver of time in the day around sunrise or sunset where your images are bathed in the golden glow from the sun. Just after sunrise and late afternoon before the sun sets are also ideal times of the day to capture epic images because the light is not too harsh.

If you have been following my snapchat stories on Tuesday nights you have seen sneak peeks of my four week #GetOutHere training journey with my media group; where we have been getting to trial new NTC and H.I.T and Run workouts lead by Nike Master Trainer Eva Redpath and Nike+ Run Coach Inge. Unlocking Memorable Moments on Janet Jackson’s Unbreakable World Tour With American Express Invites

Janet Jackson Unbreakable

If there’s one thing I love about American Express, it’s that I can always count on them to help me unlock amazing moments when it comes to fashion, live music, sports and culinary experiences. One of the most sought after concert of 2015 has been Janet Jackson’s Unbreakable world tour, which hit Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on September 15th. Janet will always have a place in my heart and has practically been there for many of my firsts in life. Her Rhythm Nation 1814 album was the first cassette tape I ever owned. When the album dropped, she was the first live concert I ever attended, which happened to be at the same venue I watched her perform last week – The Rogers Centre, formally known at the SkyDome. Janet’s music was around for my first kiss, first love, first breakup and everywhere in between. She was like the older sister I always wished I had.

Janet Jackson Unbreakable

Having great seats to this sold out show was non-negotiable and luckily for my friends and I, we were able to secure our tickets before they went on sale through Amex’s exclusive Front Of The Line program. As a frequent concert-goer, this perk completely takes the anxiety away when trying to get access to shows in the city. This is just one of the many benefits of being an American Express Cardmember. In addition to advance ticket sales, becoming a Cardmember allows you to avoid long lines by using their dedicated access into select venues, including a slew of other advantages such as Front Of The Line Reserved Ticket allotments and Delights Special Offers and Experiences.

Out of all the moments I unlocked this year with American Express, this was by far the most memorable. The show was everything I hoped it would be and more. With 32 back-to-back hits including “Pleasure Principle”, “Escapade” and “Miss You Much” along with some of the most technical choreography executed by nine insanely talented dancers, the show seemed to fly by.

Amex unlocks moments like these for roughly half a million Canadians every year through it’s partnerships with Live Nation, Mirvish, and Massey Hall, just to name a few. With a wide variety of partners appealing to a number of passions, Amex provides its Cardmembers unparalleled access to the most inspiring events and experiences. In case you missed it, you can read how Amex unlocked moments for us at the Oddball Comedy Festival at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre here.

Unlocking Memorable Summer Moments With American Express Invites

American Express Invites

Not a summer in the city goes by without me attending at least one live show or concert. Some of my most memorable concert experiences have been at Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in Toronto, where I’ve seen some of today’s greatest acts perform underneath the night’s sky. Being an American Express Cardmember makes these experiences even more memorable by providing unparalleled access to some of the most highly anticipated shows in the city. The brand has carved a niche in providing unique dining, culture, film, sports and fashion experiences through their American Express Invites platform which includes Front Of The Line Advanced Presale Access, Front Of The Line Reserved Ticket allotment, Front Of The Line Entertainment E-updates and Delights Special Offers and Experiences.

American Express Invites

Over the Labour Day long weekend I attended the Oddball Comedy Festival, which featured a hilarious line-up of comedians headlined by everyone’s favourite funny man Aziz Ansari and comedy’s new “It-Girl” Amy Schumer. With it being the last weekend of the summer, the Oddball Fest was the place to be on Sunday evening, so naturally people came out in droves. None of this was a worry of course, because as American Express Cardmembers, my friend Christian of ChristianConfidential and I breezed through the dedicated entrance reserved for Cardmembers. No waiting in line meant we had time to kill pre-show, which we did in the comfort of the American Express Lounge. Other than the line by-pass, the Cardmember lounge is one of my favourite benefits. Here is where I often cozy up on the patio with other friends who may be attending the show, have drinks and pre-show bites provided by fave restaurant Barque. To be honest, the food is so ridiculously delicious; I am usually one of the last people to leave the lounge when it’s show time. With our palettes satisfied from the American Express Lounge, it was time to take in the show, and I do not think I have ever laughed so much in my entire adult life.

The summer may be over but amazing experiences with American Express don’t end here. After 25 years of partnerships with Live Nation and Mirvish, Massey Hall, Molson Amphitheatre etc. Amex is expanding their model to bring it’s Cardmembers even more entertainment and lifestyle experiences through American Express Invites, with value added elements that can only be accessible and enjoyed through American Express. And trust me, when it comes to access, nobody can come close to the experiences curated by Amex.

American Express Invites

Through my job and Amex Cardmember benefits, I have been blessed to collect a series of very special moments that I will remember for a lifetime. I am sure you would agree, some of our most memorable moments have come from experiences that have been designed exclusively for us – and that’s basically what American Express Invites is all about. No matter what your interests are, your style or taste, American Express has just the experience for you! You too can unlock memorable moments and have exclusive lifestyle experiences with American Express Invites. There is no better time than now to create epic moments and memories. GIVEAWAY | Let’s Celebrate at the #MogoPerks Party

Mogo Perks Party

One of my resolutions this year was to be more fiscally responsible and in January I teamed up with Mogo to learn how to do more and spend less, which started with my “Winter Weekend With Mogo” experience. I have managed to stay on track with my New Year’s resolution, thanks to my Mogo Prepaid Visa® Card. It makes it convenient for me to make purchases anywhere major credit cards are accepted, while allowing me to stay in control of my money and avoid the dreaded “D” word – debt. Trust me, this is a feat in itself and deserves a celebration, so I went out and picked up some things to get me “party ready” with my personalized card for this week’s Mogo extravaganza.

This Thursday April 30th, Mogo will proudly present their first #MogoPerks party in collaborating with No Fun Press, Kastor & Pollux and The Creator Class at Toronto’s Neubacher Shor Contemporary Gallery on Queen West. In keeping with the spirit of creative minds collaborating from varying disciplines, the event will feature an installation by T.O. based artist Trevor Wheatley, a live performance by an special guest and the unveiling of the brand’s new Mogo Prepaid Visa® Card co-designed with No Fun Press.

Cadillac Reveals Its Premium Luxury CT6 Sedan in NYC

Cadillac CT6 Sedan

For the last year and a half I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with General Motors Canada and their diverse portfolio of brands. Very early on in our relationship, I was drawn to the offerings of the Cadillac brand. If you have been reading my blog for a while you are well aware of my passion for cars which I credit to my father’s influence. Like many other car enthusiasts, I had the common misconception that only Germans knew about performance and could make cars for “drivers” while North American companies focused on making vehicles for “passengers” with fancy bells and whistles. Well, boy was I ever wrong! Something special has been happening with Cadillac over the last year and the brand’s focus has been on finding ways to marry the worlds of performance, technology and luxury design within their fleet of vehicles. I had the privileged of getting behind the wheel of Cadillac’s SRX, ATS, CTS, CTS Sport, XTS (you can check out my road trip experience with it here) last year and it changed my view on North American cars forever.

Cadillac started 2015 off with bang. In January during the Oscars, the brand launched it’s new “Dare Greatly” campaign as part of their strategy to reposition Cadillac as a distinctive alternative to it’s German competitors. Throughout the Academy Awards broadcast, four commercials aired to promote their new CT6 luxury sedan featuring individuals with inspiring stories of how they have taken risks in their careers and included fashion designer Jason Wu and Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak. Aside from the attractive body of the vehicle that made a small cameo appearance towards the end of the first commercial, I personally was intrigued by the message because of the risks I have taken myself to get to where I am today.

I had the privilege of going to New York City at the beginning of April with a handful of Canadian media to witness the world premiere of the CT6 full size sedan and to attend the New York International Auto Show. Cadillac has long been known for it’s extravagant parties and this one was no exception. Guests walked from the Ritz Carlton in Battery Park to the pier, where we caught branded water taxis to Duggal Greenhouse at the Naval Yards in Brooklyn and got serenaded by Grammy winner Raphael Saadiq at the end of the night. Revealing the brand’s most luxurious vehicle to date in New York was fitting as Cadillac plans to relocate its headquarters to the Big Apple from Detroit, which is a move that can help them reach more luxury buyers.  What can you expect to see from the vehicle Cadillac hopes will be the catalyst into the super premium category?

Although the frame is constructed of more than 10 different materials, it is somehow still the world’s lightest and most agile full size luxury performance sedan. Easy on the eyes, the body of the CT6 is super sleek and sophisticated but it’s inside the cabin where all the magic happens. Upon entering the car, it’s hard not to notice the quality materials used, the hand stitched and cut & sewn tailored interior – that closely mimics the tailoring in the fashion industry. I am sure driving this machine or sitting shot gun is where most want to be in the CT6, but I love that Cadillac is redefining the rear seat passenger experience. With best in-class rear leg room, two high-def TV screens, quad zone cooling & heating, not to mention reclining seats…I would be more than happy to be relegated to the backseat.

Cadillac CT6 Reveal

Always on the forefront of technology advancements in their vehicles, Cadillac is stepping up their game ensuring that driving this car will not only be enjoyable but safe. The all new Bose Panaray system boasts 34 strategically placed speakers to ensure each passenger experiences concert hall sound quality. Surround view-video recording capabilities that can be used while driving, a 360-degree camera and a night vision cam that can detect animals and humans by heat signature and much more.

Tangerine Teams Up With Steve Nash for #BrightWayForward Initiative

Tangerine Bright Way Forward

Tangerine Bank will always have a special place in my heart. When I got my first job after university my parents encouraged me to open a high-interest savings account (back when the bank was known as ING) to teach me to take ownership of my finances. This not only empowered me, but also made it possible for me to purchase two vehicles and my very first property at a young age. The financial institution has made a name for themselves since 1997 for their accessible and flexible products and services with low-to-fair fees to satisfy your everyday banking needs. This year Tangerine’s CEO Peter Aceto has made a commitment to empower through the “Bright Way Forward” initiative where they have chosen to partner with a select group of charitable organizations such as; YMCA Canada, FoodShare, Youth Without Shelter, ACCES Employment, United Way, Canada Basketball in addition to the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program.

With basketball being the fastest growing and most popular sport amongst visible minorities here in Canada, joining forces with 2-time NBA MVP Steve Nash presents a unique way for Tangerine to provide young people with a new skill set, teamwork & leadership skills, while gaining a sense of belonging…all imperative elements to creating a bright way forward today and tomorrow.

TANGERINE - Steve Nash teams up with Tangerine

Tangerine Bright Way Forward

Tangerine Bright Way Forward

To kick off this exciting initiative, Tangerine hosted a launch event last week at the YMCA for media and kids from Nash’s foundation got a surprise by the Canadian basketball star, who spent time teaching them the fundamentals of the game and running on court drills. You can check out the children’s reactions in my Instagram video here. To end off the inspiring day, I joined Steve as he took over Tangerine’s twitter account for an hour where we discussed personal empowerment through sports and fans got to ask him questions for a chance to win a signed basketball jersey. Throughout the course of the hour-long twitter chat, I was able to share my personal stories of empowerment, how sport helped shape who I am today and was able to take away some amazing advice from Canada’s most celebrated basketball player – who reminded us that there’s, “No way around hard work. Set goals, have a plan and constantly reanalyze them!”.

Nike Women’s Run Series Announces 15K in Toronto

Nike Toronto

Yesterday Nike released the information that every single female runner on the planet has been patiently waiting for…the 2015 Nike Women Run Series race dates and cities.  For several months there has been tons of speculation and rumours swirling around and now the cat is officially out of the bag – finally! I am so excited that my hometown of Toronto will be amongst one of the amazing city’s around the world hosting a race this year. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just beginning your run journey, this is a race you will not want to miss out on. I had the privileged of running in the Nike Women San Francisco Half Marathon in 2014, you can check out my race report here, and it literally changed my life. It’s not a race, it’s an experience!

Nike Women 15K Toronto

What to expect: Race date is set for June 14, 2015 with registration opening on to the general public on March 9th, 2015. Nike likes to keep event deets under wraps for as long as possible as the brand loves the element of surprise and they love to blow participants away but what I can tell you is to expect a weekend full of celebrations tailored specifically for the beautiful city of Toronto.

Now that the official countdown is on to raceway, I wasted no time setting the groundwork for what I need to work on before the real hardcore training commences thanks to the Nike Canada team. Yesterday afternoon I got to chat with Sheila Reid, member of the 2012 Canadian Olympic team and learned that she will be the elite face of the race this summer. Her focus in competition is actually on shorter distances and specializes in 1,500 – 5,000 meter track races) and has never ran a road race before. Proof that each and every one of us will be putting ourselves to the test looking to either run farther or faster than we ever have before. I also got a chance to have a gait analysis done at the Nike Running Loft by Kristen Kuzemko, part of the Nike North American Pacer team. It was the first time I had one done.  Not only will t will help me remain injury free but it will also assist me in improving my technique, so I can conserve energy and cause less damage to my joints. I will be sharing a little more about the outcome of my run analysis in a future post. My results were all packaged up in this cool little video which you can view here.

Nike Toronto Queen West Run ClubPhotography by Nathalia Allen (Nike Canada)

I am eagerly waiting to begin formal training and I look forward to hopefully encourage you all to take part in what is the largest women’s run series in the world. Throughout the coming months I will continue to share information on how to train, tips on proper hydration, nutrition, injury prevention and more. In the meantime, do yourself a favour and get a complimentary gait analysis at the Nike Store at the Toronto Eaton Center in order to begin your training on the right foot, pun intended. Click here for more information on the International Nike Women’s Race Series and be sure to get social and follow Run Nike Women on Twitter and Facebook.
