Relax and Reset in the Spa at Equinox

Equinox Spa

Achieving optimal physical results means not only do have to train hard, but you also must make time for recovery. For the last couple of months I have been pushing my body to the limits with high-intensity group classes at Equinox however I have made sure to carve out time in my schedule to enhance my performance with the spa services at the luxe Bay Street location.

Equinox Lounge

As you can imagine there are several benefits to having access to spa services at the gym. Not only is it extremely convenient but it can also be very motivating. I would be lying if I said I’ve never treated myself to one of the services for surpassing my weekly fitness goals. More importantly, it’s pretty amazing to have spa staff that have an understanding of not only the facility’s group classes but also your personal training program. Having this knowledge allows you to have tailored treatments based on your workouts that will help speed up recovery, enhance your performance and achieve your fitness goals. By knowing the muscles used during my weekly METCON 3, Stacked and boxing classes, RMT Maria Kovatchev is able to give my body the attention and treatment it needs.

Equinox Toronto

With massage, facials and specialty services – think body wraps, bronzing, laser hair removal, nails, teeth and even lash treatments, Equinox’s highly skilled team has you covered. Similar to the other high end amenities used on the premises, their best in class treatments involve only superior products and there’s literally something for everyone on the spa menu.  You can check out the full list of services here.  With chocolate, strawberry and caviar indulgence facials now on the menu, a gift card to the Equinox spa makes a great gift idea for someone special (or yourself) on Valentine’s Day (non-members welcome).

My Dermalogica Little Grey Pass Journey to Flaunt Boutique

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

My journey to great skin with Dermalogica Canada began this past summer when I became a Brand Ambassador. I wasted no time in introducing the company’s cult fave products into my skincare regime and also started regular Dermalogia facial treatments. During my ambassadorship, my primary job has been to try out the brand’s Little Grey Pass program and share my experience with all of you. Essentially, for those of you who want to participate in the program, you will get a unique opportunity to try out some of the city’s best spas and enjoy personalized facial treatments with Dermalogica products.  My first post was on my visit to Jiva Spa & Salon, which can be found here if you missed it. My introductory facial was so amazing, I actually went back to Jiva for another one to get red carpet ready for the Toronto International Film Festival.

Last week it was time to get my second stamp on my Dermalogica passport and it couldn’t have come at a better time. After a summer of sweaty half marathon training followed by unwelcomed colder temperatures due to the change of season, I was in dire need of some skin TLC. Turns out, I was in the most capable of hands with the lovely Tamara Vault, the Dermalogica expert at Flaunt Boutique; a chic and industrial inspired beauty salon in Toronto’s Lesliville neighbourhood. After a quick face mapping diagnosis, Tamara identified some pigmentation issues around my hairline, which she credits to not evenly applying my sunscreen, some dehydration spots under my eyes, some sensitivity around the cheek area and comedones on both the chin and cheek area. In case you are unfamiliar with the term “comedone”, it simply refers to the bumps on the skin that are a result of a clogged pore. The pore could be partially or fully blocked, which causes the formation of either a blackhead or whitehead. As I wrote this post it sounded like there are a ton of issues, but I promise you my skin has seriously come a long way since I started back in July. I attribute this improvement to regularly using Dermalogica’s Sebum Clearing Masque, which is an oil absorbing masque that not only detoxifies skin but also prevents breakouts. The salicylic acid has been helping with the natural exfoliation that I was in desperate need of to clear all the congestion from my pores. Also, a dramatic increase in water has also been very beneficial.

Flaunt Boutique

I showed up to my appointment sans makeup so Tamara could delve right into my deep cleansing face treatment, which began with a gentle facial massage using the Pre-Cleanse, which was followed by the Skin Resurfacing Cleanser. Once my face was clean, Tamara expertly mixed one of my fave’s, the Daily Micro Exfoliant with accelerator 35 and a purifying botanical mixer. Of course you can’t get optimal cleansing without extractions – which is not my favourite part of getting facials.  During this process a scaling fluid was used with the Medi Bac Cleansing Complex. This step was intensified with the use of a high frequency wand. This device works by delivering an alternating high frequency electric current to the skin. Both thermal and electrical energy are delivered when the wand makes contact with the skin. This energy stimulates underlying skin collagen, cells and amazingly kills any bacteria by providing oxidized Oxygen, all helping the skin to rebound quickly after all the extractions.

After further calming my skin with a colloidal oatmeal Multi Vitamin Power Recovery Masque with a calming botanical mixer and yet another blissful massage – yes massage #2 – my face was rinsed and treated with the Daily Resurfacer, UltraCalming Mist, Multi Vitamin Power Firm, UltraCalming Serum Concentrate and Active MoistAs you can probably imagine, my skin felt hydrated, super clean and taunt. Not to mention, I was relaxed and super calm after the much needed rub down from Tamara, great music and candles. Post appointment, I had an evening full of events and she was kind enough to apply the brand’s SkinPerfect Primer, which worked wonders. It gave my skin a flawless, even tone after I applied my make-up, which stayed put for the entire night. And if that’s not enough, Tamara hooked me up with a private station so I can straighten my hair before walking out the door.

The extensive and customized “Deep Cleansing Face Treatment” lasts just over an hour and costs $90, which I guarantee will be the best 90 bucks you’ve ever spent. Your skin will thank you! Achieve Great Skin With Dermalogica’s “Little Grey Pass”

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

As much as I love fashion, I truly believe that there is no better accessory than great skin. Like many other women out there, from time to time I experience some skin related issues due to stress, menstration, environmental factors, diet, excessive sweating, etc, all of which is happening to me currently may I add. Over the last little while I been doing extensive research on Skin Mapping, which is a form of skin analysis that helps to identify and understand the causes of acne breakouts and spots. In a previous skin care post (which you can view here),  I discussed how our skin mirrors what’s going on inside the body.  It’s extremely interesting to be able to diagnose some of our internal health related issues based on the location of acne on our face and body. If like me, you’re on the quest for skin perfection, Dermalogica’s “Little Grey Pass” may be just the right program for you. This unique opportunity allows pass holders to try some of Toronto’s spas and enjoy personalized skin care treatments with Dermalogica products at each location.

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

Last week I hit up  Jiva Spa Toronto  for my very first appointment as a Dermalogica Brand Ambassador. Jiva is a a unique spa and salon that not only focuses on beauty and hair but specializes in nutritional services as well, allowing them to make their clients gorgeous from the inside-out. After chatting with their amazing Dermalogica specialist Neetu, my diagnoses on my current skin issues were confirmed after she did a once over on my face. Due to excessive sweating from exercise, dehydration, and a possible hormone imbalance, Neetu got to work creating a treatment specifically made for me using the brand’s Pre-Cleanse, Special Cleansing Gel, Daily Microfoliant, Sebum Cleaning MasqueMulti Active Toner, and Oil Control Lotion. With my skin being under duress, I was advised that the sebum cleansing masque and microfoliant were going to be key in getting my skin to where I want it to be.

Exfoliate. Infuse. Oxygenate with the 3-in-1 OxyGeneo Facial

oxygeneo

Late night parties, one too many cocktails, lack of H20 consumption and of course carb ridden canapés during the Toronto International Film Festival caused my poor skin to have a breakdown. My post festival wish was to magically find a way to restore my skin back to the supple, hydrated and smooth appearance I had at the beginning of September. This would be no small feat and believed that it would take several weeks of healthy eating, no drinking and possibly a juice cleanse (which to be honest, what I should be doing anyways) to get back to my skin status quo. I have considered myself extremely lucky to have heard about a new facial treatment from a fellow blogger buddy that replaces microdermabrasian, chemical peels and oxygen facials. And wait for it…is also non-invasive and only a 14-minute process. Recently released in Canada by a cutting edge aesthetic tech company named Pollogen now known as my beauty fairy godmother, the OxyGeneo facial infuses intense regenerating nutrients into the face and oxygenates the skin from within.

I must admit, I was a bit worried that this treatment would be too similar to microdermabrasion, which I have never tried but hear that it can be painful and cause skin irritation post procedure, but I was advised not to worry that it would be pain-free and actually a bit relaxing. Intrigued, I settled onto the bed and a small applicator wand, resembling one that is used during an ultrasound, was used to apply  NeoRevive a nutrient rich gel with peptides and retinol onto my skin’s surface which was combined with NeoBright, a gel that safely lightens and brightens containing azelaic and kojic acid. Within seconds, I felt my face heating up in addition to a tingling sensation, which I’m told is the normal reaction when the Capsugen and gel interact on the skin’s surface – and I also noticed that the gel on my face started to turn into a bubbly lather. This turns out to just be the Capugen doing it’s job cleaning and exfoliating. While the gel is being massaged into one’s skin, oxygen rich blood travels to the face, increasing the metabolism of skin cells and promoting absorption of nutrients, which includes hyaluronic acid; natures plumping and smoothing agent that is found in many injectable fillers. After 7 minutes my faced was then cleansed of the frothy layer and the exact same gel was applied to my face again, this time with hands instead of the applicator wand during a 7 minute facial massage. Strangely enough, no tingling or warming sensation – apparently it only occurs when the Capsugen is used in conjunction with the gel.

Post procedure I was beyond pleased with the results, which were immediate may I add. My complexion appeared more even and my skin literally felt soft as a baby’s bottom. The best part, unlike regular peels and facials, there was minimal skin irritation and I was able to put on make-up right after, which wasn’t really even necessary with the way my skin looked .

The Cost: Expect to pay anywhere between $150-200 for the treatment.

Where: The treatment is very new to the Canadian market but can be found at select medical spas and clinics in Canada. Head to www.geneo.ca for locations and additional information!

Mesotherapy Facial Rejuvenation | The Latest in Beauty Treatments

Mesotherapy Facial

A few weeks ago a little birdie told me about Mesotherapy facial rejuvenation treatments and I could not even pretend that I knew what it was. Somewhat new to Canada and generally misunderstood in North America, it is practiced by over 10,000 doctors in Europe (and we already know Europeans are always on the cutting edge of beauty treatments). This my friends, just may be our new “holy grail” and gateway to glowing and healthy skin.

By now, you are probably typing Mesotherapy facials into Google, but no need…I will quickly break it down for you. Mesotherapy is a technique that deliver vitamins, peptides, minerals and amino acids to the dermal layer of the skin. I’m sure all you beauty junkies out there will admit that they have spent quite a few shillings on topical creams but trust me, nothing can compare to actually infusing the skin with nutrition – you literally can start to see the results after just one treatment, but of course it is recommended to do a series of 4-6 treatments. This is because the anti-aging affects only really happen when the nutrition gets into the dermis.

I turned to local Toronto Naturopathic doctors Tamarah Chaddah and Mardi Baum of Puremedica to break my Mesotherapy virginity and during my visit, they explained that Meso is also used for a myriad of medical conditions; cellulite removal, pain management, alopecia, aesthetics, in addition to lipolysis (dissolution of fat deposits). Ladies, if you have a bit of unwanted fat deposits around your middle section aka, the dreaded “muffin top” you should definitely look into this treatment as it breaks down fat 5% faster than it would on it’s own.

Puremedica

Dr. Mardi Baum and Dr. Tamarah Chaddah – Founders of Puremedica

Let’s be real here, aging isn’t something we can prevent…we are not Benjamin Button, but with proper nutrition, a healthy lifestyle and consistent beauty/facial treatments, we can slow the process down a bit. Some may turn to Botox and fillers, which I am totally not against at all, I just prefer to steer towards more of a natural alternative that can help to repair and heal skin damage. Botox and fillers will definitely improve wrinkles and lines and plump the face, but it doesn’t help you achieve the healthy glow like what you would experience with Mesotherapy.

The entire treatment takes about 60-70 minutes and here’s what you can expect:

Step #1

An analysis is done on your skin and Dr. Tamarah and Dr. Mardi indicate your problem areas and record any allergies.

Puremedica mesotherapy

Step #2

Skin is cleansed with a toner (it is recommended to come to your appointment without make-up)

Step #3

A peeling mask is applied and left on for 10 minutes. This peel contains AHA and glycolic acid. It is absolutely amazing for acne prone skin like mine.

mesotherapy treatment

Step # 4

Mesotherapy injections are prepared by the doctor, which are simply a series of micro injections roughly 3-4 mm deep. Completely non-invasive and virtually painless. Inserting the cocktail into the skin is important so it works both internally and externally.

Step #5

A soothing, clay based mask is then applied and is left on for 10 minutes.

Step #6

Finish with a glycolic serum which is the second most integral part of the treatment. My skin was so soft and glowing immediately after my treatment. The image below is me with no makeup on.

Puremedica

I know it sounds to good to be true, but this so-called “cocktail” used in the injections improves the health of the dermal layer of the skin, enhances skin regeneration, improves colour and tone, eliminates hyperpigmentation, sagging, fine lines and wrinkles as well. If you’re into natural remedies and treatments, then this is definitely for you. DO NOT let the idea of a needle deter you…I experienced no pain at all and the results are sooooo worth it. I loved it so much I wanted to hold a contest in which one lucky reader can win a Mesotherapy treatment valued at $200 on SoSasha.com.

Ultrasonic Chono Facials | Fresh Touch Medi Day Spa

“Sharing is Caring” is probably one of the first rules I learned in nursery school and I’ve reminded myself of this old adage after recently adding ultrasonic facials into my pre-wedding beauty routine. When it comes to treatments, I have to be honest, I have been a bit of a Spa Snob in the past but I have been receiving emails from readers asking about day spas and treatments at locations outside of the downtown (Toronto) core, which couldn’t have been more timely as someone recently introduced me to the life changing Ultrasonic Chrono Facial at Fresh Touch Medi Spa located 30 minutes east of the city in Pickering.

Since October, I have had three Ultrasonic treatments and it has now become my latest beauty obsesh and would highly recommend it to any woman, or man, who is looking for superior deep cleaning of their pores and an improved, even skin tone. I have seen dramatic improvements in my skin and am now confident that I will achieve the clearest skin possible by the time my Spring wedding rolls around. After having facials at well known spas around the city, I think this facial is probably one of the best and comprehensive I have had to date.

If I have yet to entice you to try this miracle treatment, here is what you will experience during your 75-90 minute session…

  • Deep cleansing, exfoliating and steam. The facialist will use the ultrasonic tool during the steaming process which will help further exfoliate and remove dead skin. Moreover, it softens and emolifies the sebum for easy removal
  • Next, a vacuum machine (not used by many facialists around the city) is used for deep cleaning when pores are already opened. It removes a lot of surface dirt and works wonders for circulation. Mature clients really love it’s benefits!
  • Extractions – the not so pleasant part of the facial but of course necessary. It is extremely important to remove bacteria, black and white heads from the pores to avoid future breakouts
  • The High Frequency Zapper is used next to attack zits using oxidized electricity and also kills bacteria pathogens. The facialist informed me that its great for newly formed pimples/zits as it basically stops them dead in their tracks and speeds up the healing process. She was not joking because the few I had on my face had completely dried up within 24 hours.
  • A little bit more steam while you enjoy an amazing neck massage. This step is what I like to refer to as “Cloud Nine”
  • If you suffer from acne flare-ups like I do, then there will be some additional manual extractions and lancet to remove the head of blackheads to avoid unnecessary scaring
  • Based on your skin type, a signature mask is then applied using specialized minerals and oil blend,s while receiving an arm and hand massage

I promise you, you will not be disappointed with the results. Of course, like any other beauty treatment out there, frequency and consistency will provide the best results. Depending on skin issues, it is ideal to have facials every 4-6 weeks…which I have agreed to do as part of my wedding beauty regime. *Tip: Make sure to book your facial with seasoned aesthetican Marilyn Nickerson!
