Garnier Colour Styler | Intense Colours, No Strings Attached

Garnier Colour Styler

Ombre made it’s trend setting debut a few years ago and since then I have heard terms like “chambre”, “sombre” and “bombre” used to describe the severity, or subtleness if you will, of the transitional hair colour. What may come as a surprise to most of you, I have never had another colour other than my own natural dark brown/black. To be completely honest, I have always worried that dyeing would damage my hair, feared that the colours I loved on other people wouldn’t match my skin tone, and was petrified of the long term commitment. 2014 has been a year of many firsts for me, so I thought it was finally time to try something new and bold with my hair.

Thanks to Garnier, I have been able to add dramatic colour to my locks with “Color Styler“, an easy to use, intense wash-out colour treatment. I did have my reservations at first, wondering if this product would work on “Black/African American” textured hair.  However, I did my research and discovered this innovative colorant is equipped with a special colour-coat technology that covers each strand of hair with in a thin coat, without actually penetrating the hair fiber. This enables the colour to be easily washed out without causing any unnecessary damage to the hair. Armed with this knowledge, I was ready to have some fun and experiment with one of the industry’s latest trends.

Kylie Jenner Blue Dip Dye

The inspiration for my hair makeover was Kylie Jenner. Yes…surprising I know, but there is something about her blue dip-dyed locks that I love. Also, I was sure that my new hair would be sure to stand out amongst a crowd as most women are leaning more towards darker tones for the fall and winter months. Using Color Styler was incredibly easy and probably only took me 25 minutes to complete the entire process. The product is meant to be used on dry hair and requires no waiting or rinsing – ummmm bonus! I literally just sectioned pieces of my hair and applied the “Blue Burst” colour cream with my fingertips using only half the bottle’s contents. Once I had penetrated the entire desired area, I used a blow dryer to to expedite the drying process, combed through, added a tiny drop of hair serum, then flat ironed my hair to give it a sleek look.

Garnier Color Styler

In addition to being damage and commitment free (Color Styler has an average hold of 2 shampoos but can have a longer wear depending on hair type and quantity applied), I was really surprised to discover that the colour doesn’t rub off or stain clothes. I had fully anticipated my pillow case would be blue when I woke up the next morning. Needless to say, I was pleased that my Frette linen remained crispy white throughout the night. Here’s my big hair reveal last night at the Thom Browne event at The Room inside Hudson’s Bay:

Garnier Color Styler

Garnier Color Styler is available in 5 shades; Pink Pop, Blue Burst, Purple Mania, Red Temptation and Bronze Attitude and can be currently found in drugstores and most mass market retailers across Canada for only $10.49 CDN. I’m so obsessed with my hair right now I want to give two lucky followers a chance to win my Color Styler by Garnier contest. Entering is easy, all you need to do is tweet “@SashaExeter I want to try a bold new hair colour with @GarnierCan’s #ColorStyler” or comment under the post on my Facebook page here to enter. Contest begins Wednesday November 5th and ends Wednesday November 12th at 10pm EST. The winner of the contest will be announced on November 13th at 10am EST via Twitter and Facebook. *Contest open to Canadian residents only* – Good Luck!!!!!

My Dermalogica Little Grey Pass Journey to Flaunt Boutique

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

My journey to great skin with Dermalogica Canada began this past summer when I became a Brand Ambassador. I wasted no time in introducing the company’s cult fave products into my skincare regime and also started regular Dermalogia facial treatments. During my ambassadorship, my primary job has been to try out the brand’s Little Grey Pass program and share my experience with all of you. Essentially, for those of you who want to participate in the program, you will get a unique opportunity to try out some of the city’s best spas and enjoy personalized facial treatments with Dermalogica products.  My first post was on my visit to Jiva Spa & Salon, which can be found here if you missed it. My introductory facial was so amazing, I actually went back to Jiva for another one to get red carpet ready for the Toronto International Film Festival.

Last week it was time to get my second stamp on my Dermalogica passport and it couldn’t have come at a better time. After a summer of sweaty half marathon training followed by unwelcomed colder temperatures due to the change of season, I was in dire need of some skin TLC. Turns out, I was in the most capable of hands with the lovely Tamara Vault, the Dermalogica expert at Flaunt Boutique; a chic and industrial inspired beauty salon in Toronto’s Lesliville neighbourhood. After a quick face mapping diagnosis, Tamara identified some pigmentation issues around my hairline, which she credits to not evenly applying my sunscreen, some dehydration spots under my eyes, some sensitivity around the cheek area and comedones on both the chin and cheek area. In case you are unfamiliar with the term “comedone”, it simply refers to the bumps on the skin that are a result of a clogged pore. The pore could be partially or fully blocked, which causes the formation of either a blackhead or whitehead. As I wrote this post it sounded like there are a ton of issues, but I promise you my skin has seriously come a long way since I started back in July. I attribute this improvement to regularly using Dermalogica’s Sebum Clearing Masque, which is an oil absorbing masque that not only detoxifies skin but also prevents breakouts. The salicylic acid has been helping with the natural exfoliation that I was in desperate need of to clear all the congestion from my pores. Also, a dramatic increase in water has also been very beneficial.

Flaunt Boutique

I showed up to my appointment sans makeup so Tamara could delve right into my deep cleansing face treatment, which began with a gentle facial massage using the Pre-Cleanse, which was followed by the Skin Resurfacing Cleanser. Once my face was clean, Tamara expertly mixed one of my fave’s, the Daily Micro Exfoliant with accelerator 35 and a purifying botanical mixer. Of course you can’t get optimal cleansing without extractions – which is not my favourite part of getting facials.  During this process a scaling fluid was used with the Medi Bac Cleansing Complex. This step was intensified with the use of a high frequency wand. This device works by delivering an alternating high frequency electric current to the skin. Both thermal and electrical energy are delivered when the wand makes contact with the skin. This energy stimulates underlying skin collagen, cells and amazingly kills any bacteria by providing oxidized Oxygen, all helping the skin to rebound quickly after all the extractions.

After further calming my skin with a colloidal oatmeal Multi Vitamin Power Recovery Masque with a calming botanical mixer and yet another blissful massage – yes massage #2 – my face was rinsed and treated with the Daily Resurfacer, UltraCalming Mist, Multi Vitamin Power Firm, UltraCalming Serum Concentrate and Active MoistAs you can probably imagine, my skin felt hydrated, super clean and taunt. Not to mention, I was relaxed and super calm after the much needed rub down from Tamara, great music and candles. Post appointment, I had an evening full of events and she was kind enough to apply the brand’s SkinPerfect Primer, which worked wonders. It gave my skin a flawless, even tone after I applied my make-up, which stayed put for the entire night. And if that’s not enough, Tamara hooked me up with a private station so I can straighten my hair before walking out the door.

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

Christian Louboutin Takes Nail Polish To New Heights

Louboutin Rouge

Famous for his ultra sexy shoes with iconic eye-catching crimson soles, designer Christian Louboutin has shifted his focus from footwear to beauty with the launch of his Rouge Louboutin Nail Lacquer Color – a polish that simply demands attention just like his shoes.  Louboutin’s connection to the bold red colour dates back to over two decades ago, “In 1992 I was designing a shoe called Pensées. I was satisfied with the sketch of the shoe, but disappointed when I received the prototype from the factory. I couldn’t put my finger on what was missing, even though the prototype was very similar to the sketch. My assistant was painting her nails red next to me, so I grabbed her polish and proceeded to paint the soles of the shoes red. From that moment on, red soles became my signature. The red sole was born from red nail polish…now I’m going to give back to nails what the shoe took from them years ago.”

True to Louboutin form, Rouge Louboutin over delivers on the product’s formula, colour and packaging. With it’s luxe glossy back cap tapered like a calligraphy pen and a faceted ombre bottle, inspired by 17th and 18th century European balustrades to house the high-shine lacquer, it accurately captures the designer’s love for art and architecture…with a celebration of colour and form. The rich formula inside the stunning bottle captures the brilliance of the finish in just two coats, using rich pigments to amplify the hue and create a timeless red that works on all skin tones.

“I want the woman to take her time and enjoy this different experience of painting her nails. The pleasure of the object as well as the pleasure of colour. The application will be a painterly and artistic experience, both for her and anyone who may be watching her. My goal is for a woman to feel beautiful, and the most important thing is that she feels satisfied when she looks at herself.” the designer explains.

Rouge Louboutin is now available for purchase exclusively at Holt Renfrew in Canada for $57 and Sephora locations in the United States for $50.

Achieve Great Skin With Dermalogica’s “Little Grey Pass”

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

As much as I love fashion, I truly believe that there is no better accessory than great skin. Like many other women out there, from time to time I experience some skin related issues due to stress, menstration, environmental factors, diet, excessive sweating, etc, all of which is happening to me currently may I add. Over the last little while I been doing extensive research on Skin Mapping, which is a form of skin analysis that helps to identify and understand the causes of acne breakouts and spots. In a previous skin care post (which you can view here),  I discussed how our skin mirrors what’s going on inside the body.  It’s extremely interesting to be able to diagnose some of our internal health related issues based on the location of acne on our face and body. If like me, you’re on the quest for skin perfection, Dermalogica’s “Little Grey Pass” may be just the right program for you. This unique opportunity allows pass holders to try some of Toronto’s spas and enjoy personalized skin care treatments with Dermalogica products at each location.

Dermalogica Little Grey Pass

Last week I hit up  Jiva Spa Toronto  for my very first appointment as a Dermalogica Brand Ambassador. Jiva is a a unique spa and salon that not only focuses on beauty and hair but specializes in nutritional services as well, allowing them to make their clients gorgeous from the inside-out. After chatting with their amazing Dermalogica specialist Neetu, my diagnoses on my current skin issues were confirmed after she did a once over on my face. Due to excessive sweating from exercise, dehydration, and a possible hormone imbalance, Neetu got to work creating a treatment specifically made for me using the brand’s Pre-Cleanse, Special Cleansing Gel, Daily Microfoliant, Sebum Cleaning MasqueMulti Active Toner, and Oil Control Lotion. With my skin being under duress, I was advised that the sebum cleansing masque and microfoliant were going to be key in getting my skin to where I want it to be.

It’s easy, head over to Once you receive your pass, you will gain a stamp for each 1 hour Dermalogica skin treatment you purchase (one stamp per location). 4 Natural & Safe Ways to Whiten Your Teeth at Home

Natural Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is not a new craze by any means so I’m pretty sure most of you have thought about whitening your smile at some point… if you have not done so already. I will admit, I have a bit of an obsession with white teeth and for the last decade have frequently thought about getting my teeth professionally whitened by my dentist, but I am terrified of the chemicals involved. Someone once told me that there are harmful chemicals in over-the-counter solutions like Crest White Strips, so that clearly was a no-go for me. Therefore, I haven’t done anything to achieve the goal of the ultimate pearly whites with the exception of cheating and wearing red lipstick (did you know a red lippy is a way to make your teeth appear whiter?). Although these healthier alternatives may not whiten as well as professional whitening trays, they have been said to get some decent results, and safely may I add.

Banana Peel Method

Banana Peel Teeth Whitening

Bananas contain extremely high amounts of essential minerals like Potassium, Magnesium, and Manganese and combined help to safely remove stains from teeth, which is probably why this was the most popular (and bizarre) searched way to whiten teeth naturally on Pinterest. An added bonus, because this fruit is also packed with Vitamin D, it also helps to strengthen your teeth.

What You’ll Need: The peel of one ripe banana. It is imperative for the banana to be ripe because it will contain the right amount of Potassium needed to effectively brighten teeth.

How To Whiten: Rub the inside of the peel on your upper and lower teeth (one minute on each). Let the peel paste sit on your teeth anywhere from 3-10 minutes, if possible without letting your lips touch your teeth. When finished, simply brush and rinse.

Strawberry Baking Soda Paste

Strawberry Baking Soda MethodI adore strawberries so when I discovered just noshing on them is a great way to remove plaque and brighten teeth due to their level of Vitamin C and Malic acid, I was thrilled. Until doing my research, I had never heard of Malic but it is the key ingredient here as it acts as a super powerful astringent that removes surface stains. When strawberries are combined with baking soda it becomes a magical whitening solution.

What You’ll Need: 1 Strawberry and 1/2 Tbsp of Baking Soda

How To Whiten: Crush the strawberry then add baking soda. Using a toothbrush, spread the paste onto your teeth and leave it on for up to 5 minutes. Rinse and brush when finished

Activated Charcoal Rinse

Charcoal RinseThe idea of putting something black in your mouth to whiten your teeth sounds a bit counterproductive I know, but there is a reason charcoal is found in Brita water filters. It acts as a magnet which actively sucks out toxins and it works the same way on teeth. When using this rinse on your teeth, it safely removes the tannins, found in most food and drinks and unfortunately cause teeth stains, in addition to toxins.

What You’ll Need: Activated charcoal (it can be purchased at your local health store) and water.

How to Whiten: Combine equal parts charcoal and water. Swish the liquid around in your mouth for 1 minute and then hold in front of your teeth for up to 5 minutes, if possible. Once you’re finished, spit it out, rinse with fresh water and repeat until all the charcoal has been removed.

Orange Peel Scrub

Orange Peel ScrubWithin the white of an orange peel hides a natural whitening solvent called Limonene and is often found in household cleaning products to help remove stains. My initial thought was that the citric acid found in oranges could damage the tooth enamel but turns out, there isn’t any in that part of the fruit, so you’re totally safe.

What You’ll Need: A few peels from a medium or large sized orange.

How To Whiten: Rub the inside of the peel against your teeth and repeat with a new section of the peel as much as you want. When finished, just rinse your mouth out

The Miraj Hamman Spa by Caudalie Paris at the Shangri-La Hotel

Miraj Hammam Spa

Marrakesh has long been on my travel “bucket list” and seeing as though I’m not heading to there anytime soon, I figured a good consolation would be to enjoy a Moroccan inspired treatment at the Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris located on the fifth floor of Toronto’s Shangri-La Hotel. Within this expansive 9,000 sqft, otherworldly oasis, patrons can enjoy unique body and face treatments by the spa’s highly trained staff using Caudalie Paris products – known for their anti-oxidant properties.

Miraj Hammam SpaMiraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie ParisShangri-La High Tea

I began my afternoon with an hour long tea service in the hotel’s heavenly smelling lobby lounge. I would like to consider myself somewhat of a high tea connoisseur and for the past couple of years has been my favourite high-tea service in the city. After noshing on delectable treats and a lavender custom tea blend from Pluck Teas I was welcomed by the spa’s warm staff and immediately escorted to the lavish change room to begin prepping for my Hammam and Gommage treatment. After dressing in a traditional sarong, I was then guided into a private Jerusalem gold marble steam room, infused with an intense amount of Eucalyptus. This Eucalyptus was used to help me detoxify, relax and help open up my respiratory passage.

Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie

My treatment commenced in the High Intensity steam chamber, set at 115 degrees, for a 15 minute detoxification. This was then followed by a 15 minute body exfoliation in the Low Intensity area with a temperature set at 105 degrees. Here I lay on a large marble slab and used my sarong as a protective layer between myself and the slab, while my informative and sweet therapist Kassie (you must request her, she is a dream) exfoliated my body from head to toe using traditional black Moroccan soap…infused with Eucalyptus and made with an olive oil base.  This black soap mixture helps in drawing out more toxins, allowing my skin to be fully prepped for maximum exfoliation and was applied with a “Kessa” mitt. The mitt is somewhat of a traditional exfoliation glove used to remove dead skin cells, leaving behind nothing but new, smooth and rejuvenated skin.  I had to fight to stay awake to ask my questions about this procedure because I was literally being rubbed into a dream-like state. Once the exfoliation was finished, my body was hosed down and I was able to see the copious amounts of dead skin cells that collected on the sarong. I highly suggest adding the Rhassoul Clay Body Masque following the exfoliation. It is a stimulating mineral rich clay that leaves your body feeling invigorated and more nourished.

If Hammam steam baths are not your thing, not to worry. Miraj Caudalie has a wide variety of body, facial, massage, hand & feet treatments and they even do St Tropez tan applications. After finishing off my treatment I chilled out in the Miraj Relaxation Lounge. Here guests can enjoy delicious Baklava and fresh grapes which is served with the spa’s exclusive Black Moroccan Chai Mint tea blend, which will have you begging the staff for some to take home. Unfortunately, this is specially imported by the head office in Vancouver and is not available for sale. My Miraj Hammam Experience was truly wonderful and will forever change the way I spa in the future!

Beauty Review: Moroccanoil Body Collection

Moroccan Oil Body Products

I remember quite clearly when I was introduced to Moroccanoil hair products many moons ago thinking that their Argan Oil based miracle hair serum was the greatest thing since sliced bread. A couple of weeks ago I received a surprise package from the angels at Moroccanoil which contained the Hand Cream, Cleansing Bar and Shower Gel from the brand’s expertly curated body line – made up of propriety ingredient blends and innovative technology.

Hand Cream – 125 ml $28

moroccanoil hand cream

Dry hands throughout the day is one of my biggest pet peeves, so I am never without hand cream in my bag. This hand cream mixes antioxidant rich Argan and Avocado Oils, in addition to Cocoa, Shea and Mango Butters, to make a heavenly concoction to not only repair dry hands, but sharpen nails and soften cuticles.  Softly fragranced with the scent of Moroccanoil, this hand cream is suitable for all skin types and leaves hands supple and soft without leaving them greasy.

Cleansing Bar – 110g $10

moroccan oil cleansing barMost soap bars are harsh and lack moisture causing skin to dry out but the Moroccanoil Cleansing Bar is a mild cleanser with lush Shea Butter and of course Argan Oil  that is gentle enough for daily use for all skin types. There are a couple other key ingredients such as Glycerin; a humectant that helps increase skin’s elasticity and long lasting moisture and Talc from Luzenac; a natural mineral that helps control body perspiration help makes this Mediterranean scented soap so effective.

Shower Gel – 200 ml $26

Moroccan Oil Shower Gel

So far the Moroccanoil Shower Gel is my fave from the line and it has made my morning showers so much more enjoyable. The rich gel is packed with ultra hydrating ingredients and although its concentrated, it is still mild enough for all skin types. The Argan Oil and Glyercin improves skin elasticity, tone, texture while adding a ton of moisture. The smell is intoxicating – in a good way and leaves me feeling ultra refreshed and ready to start my day. For best results, apply a dime size amount to a shower poof and work into a lather. Rinse off with warm water.

Moroccanoil body products are currently available for sale at luxe spas, fine salons nationwide and at Ben and Tournesol in Montreal. For more information on the rest of the products in the line, visit

Schwarzkopf Professional OSIS+ BLOW & GO Duo

Schwarzkopf OSIS Blow & Go

On the days I decide to wear my hair straight, which is more often than not, I prefer the bone straight look and yes it can be a pain to achieve and maintain I won’t lie. The blow drying and flat ironing process can be excruciating and prolonged exposure of heat to your tresses can also be harmful to your hair’s health. Alas, the OSIS+ team strikes again with two products that promise to dramatically reduce blow drying time and leave your hair voluminously thick or sleek and  smooth.

BLOW & GO “Thick” Blow Dry Spray

Schwarzkopf Osis Blow And Go Thick 200ml RED LABEL

This leave-in blow dry spray is perfect for fine, limp hair that’s in dire need of some assistance achieving extra volume. It also adds light styling control to your look which is great however I did find that it left a tiny bit of residue to my hair but it was almost worth it with the body and shine it added. My hair is already pretty thick so I don’t actually require to much volume but it is fun to have the option when I want rejuvenating voluminous Victoria Secret hair.

How To Use It: Divide hair into sections and spray evenly into hair. Create added volume by blow drying roots upwards. Blow dry and style your hair with either a round brush or paddle, depending on hair type. FYI…for my type of hair I CANNOT use a round brush and must defer to the paddle.

*Secret Tip: I have experimented with this spray on my hair when it’s curly and when applied on wet hair in conjunction with Schwarzkopf Professional OSIS’s Curl Me Soft cream, it gives me extra voluminous curls.

BLOW & GO “Smooth” Blow Dry Spray

Schwarzkopf Professional Osis Blow and Go Smooth-200

This is the wonder spray for anyone that has mild to ultra frizzy hair or wears extensions and wants to achieve hair that’s super smooth and sleek. It’s actually amazing at combating frizz so I would be really surprised if this isn’t one of OSIS’s top sellers. This product would be brilliant during the summer months when warmer, humid weather causes my hair to become a bit unruly.

How To Use It:  Divide hair into sections and spray evenly into hair. Blow dry the hair in a downwards motion with a flat, paddle brush which I find works well on all hair hypes.

*Secret Tip: I’ve been using this spray with the brand’s Flat Liner spray that I apply to my hair after blow drying and right before flat ironing for an effortless, ultra sleek look.

The verdict…each spray reduced my blow drying time down by about 8-10 minutes, leaving me to only suffer through this tedious process for about 20-25 minutes prior to flat ironing. In my opinion, I preferred the Blow & Go “Smooth” product and loved how it worked so well with the other OSIS products for straight hair. Click here for more information on the Blow & Go Duo sprays. Both can be found at a Schwarzkopf Professional Salon near you!
