The Best Toddler Gift To Give This Holiday Season

I’m a mom to a very precocious toddler and at two years old, we have reached the point at home where stuffies have become less interesting; now, it’s all about toys and activities that engage her little developing mind. The toddler years are often a trial and error period for most parents when it comes to toys. We make impulse purchases at toy stores to keep them from having meltdowns, or they are gifted for birthdays or holidays only to get discarded after being used just a handful of times. For that very reason, I have taken a more pragmatic approach in our home, preferring toys that not only keep my daughter engaged for longer, but that have also been proven to help with children’s development, like LEGO Duplo.

For 50 years, LEGO Duplo has been introducing block sets to little builders with big imaginations. These colourful plastic bricks have become iconic, and for good reason. For starters, they connect like regular LEGO bricks, but the Duplo pieces are much easier to put together and pull apart—not to mention a lot safer for toddlers, as most kids this age are still putting everything into their mouths.

Duplo is not new to our household, but we had never tried their themed play sets, like the LEGO Duplo Frozen Ice Castle. Little fans of the film are going to love this special edition set, out now ahead of the sequel’s November 20th release date. We’ve spent countless hours building and adapting the infamous castle together with its accompanying accessories on our living room floor. Every time we put the last block up, Maxwell wants to tear it down and start all over again. I actually encourage this because each time we work on building the castle, she is essentially mastering elementary construction skills and developing fine motor capabilities as she assembles and re-positions the bricks. Her little hands have grasped the basics of connecting the pieces on her own so well that she can now entertain and occupy herself using her own imagination, practicing dexterity and problem solving.

5 reasons this is a great gift idea for toddlers this holiday season

1. While building and creating, you get to watch your little one hit all these amazing early childhood developmental milestones like learning colours, shapes and numbers, while expanding their imagination and vocabulary.

2. Get some toddlers together to play with LEGO Duplo and you will quickly understand how well it facilitates social development. Besides teaching young children to take turns and share, it also promotes communication skills.

3. Even though LEGO Duplo pieces are larger than the original LEGO blocks, it still takes a fair amount of hand-eye coordination and strength to snap and pull apart the bricks. Using these blocks actually helps to strengthen the muscles in toddlers’ tiny hands, improving dexterity that will become important when they are a little older and learning to write.

4. Miniature versions of the film’s main characters—Elsa, Anna and Olaf the snowman—are included in the set, along with a slew of accessories: a slide, table, chairs, miniature kitchen equipment and outfits for the characters that allow for endless imaginative play.

5. All kids will love the multicoloured light brick feature that tops the sparkling Ice Castle. It is the last brick to be added to the castle, marking completion and giving children a feeling of accomplishment. This special brick also illuminates at the touch of a button and flashes, allowing toddlers to discover and learn to identify various colours.

For all these reasons and more, I—along with countless other parents—absolutely love LEGO Duplo. The multi-faceted Duplo building play sets will not only keep toddlers entertained longer than most toys for the 2+ age group, but parents will really appreciate that they are very educational while still keeping things fun, making it the perfect toy for toddlers this holiday season. While building and creating, you get to watch your little one hit all these amazing early childhood developmental milestones like learning colours, shapes and numbers, while expanding their imagination and vocabulary.

My Indigo Holiday Gift Guide

The holiday season is right around the corner and I am getting in the spirit early this year seeing as though this will be our first Christmas as a family with baby Maxwell. Once a self-proclaimed last minute shopper, I have now become that woman who has her tree up at the beginning of November and has already started purchasing gifts for family and friends. Trust me, I barely recognize myself.

Indigo is by far one of my favourite stores for gift giving, especially during the holidays. It’s the obvious choice for gifts for the avid readers in your life but they are so much more than just books. They have become the perfect destination for decor, novelty gifts, clothes, electronics and even the cutest stuff for babies. And who wouldn’t love a place that’s a one-stop shop for the entire family. Here’s a sneak peek at what I will be gifting my loved ones this year from Indigo.

For the Littles

Over the last two years our little family has grown as we’ve welcomed three babies into our clan. Indigo was one of my go-to’s when I was designing Maxwell’s nursery and I place I often shop for adorable onesies, books and baby decor. For Maxie, I love  Indigo Baby’s Cabin Cozy Bath Robe and “Snow Cute” onesie. For my baby niece Liv, we found the perfect  Jamie Baby Knit Pom Pom Hat in black by Lizette Handmade.

For the Guys

I always find gift giving for guys more challenging but I still think I will knock it out the park with these items for the men in my life. When I can get Réjean out of running gear into streetwear, his style is simple and classic. Keeping accessories to a minimum, he prefers to just stick to a watch when he’s not busy training. The Fossil Q Gen Smartwatch couldn’t be more perfect for Réjean. It has a classic design but also has a built-in fitness tracker. On the go, he’s able to check text messages, email, social media notifications and much more. Every few years author Dan Brown blesses his fans with a new best selling novel. My dad, a huge fan of Dan Brown will be more than happy to find the newly released “Origin” under the tree. What do you get a guy who has four kids under the age of seven (2 step kids and 2 of his own)? Well that would be my sleep deprived brother who will probably enjoy having a glass of whiskey or two during the holiday season to take the edge off his busy household with these Teroforma Whiskey for Two set. And I can’t forget my little guy Leilan. My nephew has become a book lover at the early age of two, preferring to have one of us read to him than play with his toys. I love the idea of gifting him one of the books my mom used to read to me every holiday season as kid “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”, by everyone’s favourite childhood author Dr. Seuss.

For My Mom & Mother-In-Law

Gifts for my mom and MIL (mother-in-law) couldn’t be easier thanks to Indigo. For my mom, I’ve chosen this Quilted Weekender and the 25th anniversary edition of Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words by Andrew Norton. A nod to my mother’s English background and love of who Brits fondly referred to as “The People’s Princess”. Réjean’s mom loves easy to wear, cozy clothing and I can just see her hanging by the fire wearing Indigo’s Jules Shawl Collar Cardi this winter.

For my Girls

Rupi Kaur stole every woman’s heart with the 2015 release of Milk & Honey. Her poems of love and heartbreak are relatable to any female with a pulse and the fact she’s homegrown talent from Canada is the icing on the cake. I’ve scooped up a few copies of this new age classic for a few ladies in my life. For the best friend who always has my back and is so old fashioned she often forgets she has an Instagram account…the Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Camera is just what she needs to capture moments that don’t make it on the ‘Gram. Maxwell’s arrival into this world wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing Doula Leah Jackson, who we will turn to for postnatal support and care for the baby in lieu of a nanny. She’s a legit star in my eyes and couldn’t have thought of a more perfect gift for her than Indigo’s “You’re a Star” jewelry tray, which in my opinion is a multipurpose tray also great for change and other small items. Last not least, call me selfish…but I always add myself to my gift giving list because I deserve something fabulous too! Coffee table books are my fave and I love collecting ones on fashion and photographer. There is no way I am not adding Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005-2016 to my current collection.

2014 So Sasha Holiday Gift Guide For Him

2014 Holiday Gift Guide For Men

Coming up with your own personal wish list is always easy and fun, however not so much when you need to buy for someone else – especially when it’s for your beau who has everything. I have carefully curated a small list of  items from my favourite stores and online shops that will no doubt make your man extremely happy (and very stylish!)

1. Aether Cone Wireless Speakers ($399).  Wireless speakers are nothing new but Cone’s capabilities will blow you away. It learns what, when and how someone likes to listen to music. When it’s turned on, it will automatically play what the listener loves with amazing sound quality. Small enough that it can be brought anywhere. Simple to use. Beautifully crafted and if that’s not enough, it even responds to voice commands.

Aether Cone Speaker2. Rag & Bone Cashmere Beanie ($135).  Crafted from extra soft ribbed cashmere, this grey beanie from cult contemporary brand Rag & Bone is a fall/winter wardrobe essential. Both comfy and snug, you will have to beg him to take it off.

3. Nike Flystepper 2K3 ($125). Whether he’s a lover of basketball or simply likes the swag and off court fashion of a ball player, there is no doubt he will be into this street wear sneaker inspired by the basketball shoe with the same name.  The Nike Flystepper also comes in a Black/White/Grey colour way but the all black version is classic and can be dressed up or down.

4. Rimowa Topas Multiwheel 55cm Carry-On Case ($875). Perfect for the savvy traveller who believes that style should still exist when traveling, Rimowa’s compact rigged aluminum carry-on case is the ideal hand luggage choice. It’s spacious, light, has 360 swivel wheels and an extendible handle for easy  manoeuvring. Crafted to the German company’s high standards, it makes an outstanding gift for any man with a case of wanderlust.

5. RW&Co Reversible Puffer Jacket ($140). Not every single day during winter calls for a parka. Some days call for a lighter jacket that your guy can layer over his go-to cashmere sweaters for a casual yet chic look. And the bonus, this topper from RW&Co is reversible, so it’s basically two jackets for the price of one!

6. Byredo Sunday Cologne ($250). I am not sure why Byredo called this scent Sunday Cologne because I am pretty damn sure he will want to wear it every day of the week. Buying a scent for someone else other than yourself can be a bit challenging but this one is so versatile and timeless, anyone can easily make it their signature scent.  With a patchouli base and mixed notes of incense, lavender, cardamon and bold bergamot, it’s the type of cologne you want to spray on your clothes as a reminder of your guy when he’s not around.

7. RW&Co’s Canvas Knapsack ($70). This versatile backpack from RW&Co is ideal for both weekdays and weekend getaways with tons of room. For those who have a laid back office style, it could even be used as a computer bag. The canvas and vegan leather details on the exterior will be sure to grab some attention but not to be out down by the unique paisley print interior.

8. Leica x “Edition Moncler” Camera ($2,950). The ideal gift for your gadget loving dude or fashionable friend who prefers to capture images with a real camera instead of his iPhone. With a leatherette stripped cladding in the classic Moncler logo colours, 16.5 megapixels , this cam also includes a special edition white leather carrying case.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide & Giveaway

So Sasha Valentine's Day Gift Guide

I may not truly buy into the whole idea of Valentine’s Day, but let me be clear, I have never been mad at the idea of receiving prezzies from someone I’ve fancied. Any man I’ve ever dated knows I am not a huge fan of the usual “Hallmark Holiday” gifts that us girls usually receive on February 14th, such as chocolate and lingerie that come after an overpriced prix fix dinner at some midtown restaurant. The way to this unconventional chick’s heart are items that don’t necessarily only need to be used in the bedroom and can be gifted on any day of the day of the year…and really, if you’re in love it should be Valentine’s Day everyday, no? I’ve rounded up some of my fave items (some I actually own) and others that are on my current “Lust List” in hopes to put some cool alternative gifts on your radar…

1. Diptyque Mini Candle Set – $84

There is nothing I love more than a beautifully scented candle. I have purchased all of the cult candle brands from Byredo, Jo Malone, Hotel Costes to Bond No. 9, but I always come back to the classic fragrances made by Parisian company Diptyque. The brand’s website allows you (or your beau) to create your own 3 mini candle set, which are the perfect size for the bedroom, bathroom or when traveling.

2. Charlotte Olympia “Monroe” Pumps $695

Every girl needs a pair of Charlotte Olympia’s in her closet and this classic “Monroe” pump in red suede is a fun and sexy alternative to a traditional black heel. The slight platform increases the comfort level and goes well with both denim or an LBD.

3. Jabra Solemate Mini $100

I have been ranting and raving about Jabra’s wireless options for playing music on the go both on the blog and social media. I use both the Revo Wireless headphones and the Solemate daily when I’m working out and at chilling at home. Just in time for the “Day of Love”, Jabra has introduced the new Solemate mini in red. So mini in fact, it’s practically the size of an iPhone 5 – which means you can literally carry it in your handbag! Small speakers…with a big sound!

4. Miu Miu Biker Quilted Leather Clutch $1,020

Miu Miu, quilted leather and moto inspiration…three of some of my favourite things all rolled into one handbag. The colourblocked red and white colour is super luxe and for a clutch it’s spacious enough to hold all your V-Day date essentials. A snap-fastening pocket on the back of the bag in black is perfect for conveniently storing your ID, credit cards and cash.

5. Birchbox 12 Month Membership $110

I’ve always loved the idea of beauty box memberships – they are the BEST for those of you who are commitment phobes when it comes to investing in an expensive beauty product. It is the perfect way to test out all the latest and greatest products on the market before committing and buying the full size (and often expensive full price) version of a product. Cannot think of a beauty gift for a beauty fanatic.

6. Nadege “Je T’aime” Box of 12 Macarons $26.50

Nadege Patisserie makes some of the tastiest macarons in Toronto. The boutique shop’s almond mini meringue wonders have a delicate crunch to the outer layer and filled with the most delish ganache, flavoured buttercream or jam. It’s a little piece of heaven and if I could eat them everyday without compromising my waistline, I totally would!

7. Cutler and Gross Round-Frame Acetate and Metal Mirrored Sunglasses $565

Aviators are a thing of the past. Get into 2014 with round framed sunnies from Cutler and Gross. Each of the brand’s sunnies are made by hand in Italy. The entire process to make these beauties takes approximately a month with over 30 steps. What better way to look at your lover than through these chic lenses. Taking it to another level, the arms are leather wrapped and the frame is adorned with pearlescent acetate.

8. Nespresso CitiZ & Milk Fire Engine Red $319

Latte and coffee drinkers will LOVE waking up to a fresh cup made with this ultra chic machine. It allows you to make a wide variety of hot beverage options that require frothy milk such as latte macchiatos and cappuccino and the machine looks stunning displayed on your kitchen counter.

I am giving away the cute and powerful Jabra Solemate Mini wireless speakers as a Valentine’s Day gift to one lucky follower. Entering the contest is easy…you must follow both @sashaexeter and @Jabra_US on Twitter and tweet the following to me, “@SashaExeter I want to enjoy my music with @Jabra_US’s wireless Solemate mini #SoleMateMini“. Contest starts February 10th, 2014 and ends Thursday February 13th at 9 PM EST. The lucky winner will be announced on Friday February 14th at noon.

*Contest open to Canadian and US residents only*

So Sasha 2013 Holiday Gift Guide For Her

So Sasha Holiday Gift Guide For Her

Procrastination is oh so common during this time of the year…finding the right gift for your loved ones can be a difficult task – and leaving it until the last minute can cause even the most zen person anxiety. For all of you last minute shoppers out there, I’ve rounded up some of my ultimate favourite things from this past year that would make perfect gifts for your Mother, Sister,  Besties or perhaps you will find something  that you want to add to your own wish list!

1. Byredo Eau de Parfum 1996 Inez & Vinoodh – $175: Launched late into 2013, this unisex Oriental woody fragrance is currently my favourite scent from Swedish perfume house Byredo. Founder Ben Gorham teamed up with Inez & Vinoodh for this special collaboration inspired by a photograph of a young girl entitled “Kristen 1996” taken by the fame photog duo in that year.

2. Mackage Jori Medium Crossbody Bag – $495 : Although Mackage has just entered it’s second season of accessories, one could easily believe that this leather and outerwear brand has been creating gorge, must-have bags for years. This season, the Jori Crossbody Bag was the standout star of the collection. *Also available in a black & blue combination and all black.

3. “It” by Alexa Chung – approx $20: Already a Model, TV Personality, and Designer; “Brit-It” girl Alexa Chung can now add Author to her list of achievements. Chung’s newly released hardcover book shares her influences/inspirations, musings and gives readers a glimpse into her life via drawings, pictures and personal writing.

4. Acne Studios “Merci” Leather Jacket in Grey – Original Price $2,068 Sale Price $1,448: I don’t think I’ve ever met an Acne piece I didn’t like. The brand seems to have nailed down leather moto jackets with the quality of materials used, cut and design. The proof…the brand’s “Merci” loose fit moto. The rich leather in a grey colour is absolutely stunning and allows the jacket to be worn in any season.

5. Samsung Galaxy Optical Zoom Digital Camera – $499: Shoot, edit and share your pics and videos with this tablet-like digital camera. With 16 mega pixels, it delivers crisp and clear photos and stunning Full HD video, this camera is a must for documenting special moments or for taking the perfect selfie. Best part…using the 4.8″ touchscreen , you can edit your photos to ensure they are Instagram worthy and share them immediately on your social media accounts or via email.

6. Caravelle Oversized Men’s Gold Watch – $85: There is nothing more sexy than a classic, over-sized Men’s watch on a woman and in my opinion, the bigger the better. Bulova’s newly launched watch collection inspired by New York City has beautifully crafted watches guaranteed to enhance any outfit with unbelievably attractive price points. The collection can be purchased at Sears and Ben Moss locations.

7. Thierry Lasry Deeply Sunglasses – $440: Handmade in France, Thierry Lasry frames are the epitome of chic. I got introduced to the sunglasses brand at Pink Tartan’s flagship location and immediately fell in love with the line’s aesthetic. Totally crushed out on this pair’s thick ombre frame with scaled-down lenses.

8. Mulberry Textured Leather Jewelry Case – $600: What better way for a gal to pack and carry her prize jewelry possessions than in this luxe textured leather case? The ideal gift for any savvy traveler, the case has three separate components to keep all delicate pieces separated.
