Casual Chic in Breton Stripes

Breton stripes somehow always reminded me of French fashion, so when I found this chic little Hatch Collection dress, I immediately snatched it up for my recent trip to France. To be honest, I hadn’t realized exactly why I associated stripes with the capital of fashion but during my visit I learned that the Breton stripe originated in Bretagne (pronounced Brittany in English), a region in the North West coast of France. I just so happened to spend a couple days in one of it’s small towns, La Gacilly, with Yves Rocher. The original knitted Breton shirt with blue and white stripes was made for the French army and the stripe pattern is so closely linked to Bretagne, that their flag even contains the Breton stripe pattern.

While non-maternity fashion has dominated majority of my looks during my pregnancy, I have stumbled across some brands with pieces so great, that I couldn’t resist getting – and truthfully, if I didn’t tell you they were maternity, you would have no clue at all. If you’re expecting you NEED to check out Hatch Collection for their cult fave dresses, jumpsuits, tops, denim and swimwear. I picked up this Hatch 3/4 Dress from Ani & Wren here in Toronto.

The Meghan Markle for Reitmans Collection You Need This Fall

I think a common goal for most women-on-the-go is to build a closet full of wearable pieces that can seamlessly take them from the “desk to dinner”. We actually wear only 20% of our wardrobe, 80% of the time, so it only makes sense to arm ourselves with classic items that we can shamelessly keep on heavy rotation all season long.

Meghan Markle is legitimately one of the kindest people I know, happens to be a lead characters on one of my favourite TV shows (Suits), and has such amazing personal style, the beauty has teamed up with Reitmans for the second season as a design collaborator on a capsule collection. And the results…quite amazing if I do say so myself! The collection features everything you need for the fall/winter season. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Reflecting Meghan’s personal style, the 5 piece collection consists of cropped pencil pants, white boyfriend-style blouse, a ridiculously gorgeous cashmere blend poncho and what everyone is going to want – a leather pencil skirt that literally hugs every corner of your curves and a super versatile turtleneck bodysuit. And not only are the pieces good quality, the price point is affordable, making the collection attainable for so many.

Based on this look, I am anticipating that the Meghan Markle Fall Collection is legit going to fly off shelves. It will be available both online and in select stores across Canada as of November 3rd, but my friends at Reitmans are graciously giving you exclusive access to pre shop the line. Click here to learn more and to become a registered shopper for early access to the collection. Setting Sail with Lacoste #LacosteSailingNorth

Lacoste Sailing

When I think of the brand Lacoste, two words immediately come to mind. Classic and chic. And what could be more classic and chic than sailing on a yacht with your friends over lunch and vino to view the brand’s upcoming footwear collections? Well, that’s exactly what I did last Friday and sorry, I’m not sorry! Decked out in my cropped Lacoste polo and fresh white Grad Vulc’s on my feet (each of the guests footwear was handpicked to reflect our personal styles), I was ready to set sail for the day.

After noshing on a tasty meal from Sud Forno and custom cold pressed juices, the Lacoste team took us through the AW15 product line-up, which used it’s nautical heritage merged with classic winter styles, giving them a modern update. I had my eyes on the leather Rosolinn ankle boots and knee high version which has a riding boot silhouette. Also a fan fave, the patent leather oxfords, that will undoubtedly be on all of our wish list’s this fall. However, it was the sneak peek at the SS16 women’s footwear collection that got me really excited. The high top sneaker (featured below) has me inpatient for next spring. Lacoste goes back to it’s tennis roots in next year’s collection where you will find references to the sport; think influences from the net found on the court to even the grip tape on a racquet, cleverly integrated into the design. The range is so versatile with literally a shoe to fit anyone’s personal style aesthetic.

My Grad Vulc sneaks are available now at Town Shoes locations for approximately $135 CDN. To view Lacoste’s full collection of footwear, apparel and accessories, head to Lacoste.com. Thank you Lacoste for such an amazing day on the water with my babes. Could not think of a more fun way to attend a collection preview.

Breton Stripes Are Making a Comeback

424 Fifth "Amour" Bretton Stripe Shirt

The fashion industry is notoriously known for being cyclical and revisiting the past for inspiration. I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to fashion history so when an oldie but goodie resurrects itself as a current “Must-Have”, I tend to get a bit excited. This fall one of my go-to American brands for affordable luxury, 424 Fifth, has brought back the classic Breton stripped shirt, which just so happens to match new newly dip dyed blue locks.

Horizontal stripes are feared by many, but I actually think this piece looks great on anybody and 424 Fifth gives several reasons as to why you should own one this season; it’s easy to wear, well priced, casual and versatile.

424 Fifth Breton Striped Amour Shirt

A little history on the Breton stripe…most make the assumption it derives from the U.S. and associate it with the “American Chic” aesthetic, however it actually originated in a French province that occupies the peninsula between the English Channel and Bay of Bicay, which explains it’s nautical affiliation. This long sleeved shirt traditionally has stripes that begins around the breast bone and has a boat neck.

424 Fifth Breton Stripe Amour Shirt

Although this trend has appeared in runway collections by Jean Paul Gaultier and Balmain in previous years, I have more of an affinity to the pared-down take on this classic. For a casual yet chic afternoon look last weekend, I pushed up my sleeves on this slightly oversized Breton shirt with the French word for “love” in sequins across the front, paired it with the brand’s wool knitted flare skirt and seasonally appropriate heels. I was in a flirtatious mood on Sunday and decided to roll the top of the skirt to reveal more leg but when worn the way it’s intended, it’s actually several inches longer making it perfect for the office. My watch has a very special story and not only does it look good but it does good as well. This particular 1 Face Watch style raises money to help alleviate hunger and eradicate poverty around the world and one watch equals food for 16 people.

Stepping Into Fall With Transitional Chic Booties

Vince Camuto KlaytonDressing for the transition between seasons can be fun sometimes but seldom easy. Having to make decisions between skirts or pants, light or dark colours, fabric choices and of course footwear. Choosing a pair of shoes can pose as a difficult task because you don’t want to look like that crazed lunatic wearing sandals when it’s cool outside but you also don’t want your feet sweating and swelling in boots if the day turns out to be 27 degrees celsius. My two transitional fashion rules have always been; 1) Leave the house with layers. If you get hot you can alway remove something and on those cool fall evenings you have something to throw on or put over your shoulders to keep you warm and 2) Invest in a pair of stylish shoes that can take you from summer to fall in serious style.

Vince Camuto Klayton Booties

This season I will be swapping my sandals for open toe booties. They’re summery enough to allow me to show off my pedicure, yet still keep me warm on cooler nights.  The versatility of these chic booties from the newly opened Vince Camuto flagship store in Toronto, will definitely mean they will be in high rotation over the next few months.

NTC’s Total Body Sculpting Workout ft. Nike Master Trainer Eva Redpath

Nike Training Club

Since the beginning of the year I’ve been talking frequently about my obsession with the Nike Training Club (NTC) program and often wonder how I was living without it before. Although I am extremely fortunate to workout with Canada’s first Nike Master Trainer Eva Redpath weekly here in Toronto, I turn to the app several times a week when I am training on my own. If you are looking for a way to stay motivated, have variety in your workouts and create training programs to help you achieve your goals, then look no further than the NTC+ app, which you can download for free on iTunes. I promise you, it’s like having a trainer…whenever…wherever.

The Total Body Sculpting Workout is one I love to use a lot. Its a 45 minute intense sesh of cardio and fat burning. The best part…it requires very little space and minimal equipment to execute, so it’s perfect when exercising at home or while traveling.  This workout is based on circuit training and is very similar to what I am currently doing with Eva on Thursday mornings. It consists of performing multiple exercises on multiple body parts in a row with little rest in between exercises. Through this style of workout, I’ve gained muscle through resistance training, while also increasing my cardio endurance, which is achieved during the slightly elevated heart rate that is maintained in between sets and throughout the overall program.

How to Begin The Total Body Sculpting Workout

Once you have downloaded the app on your phone or iPad, go through the following steps to locate and begin this workout:

1. Choose “Get Workout” on the home screen

2. Select “Get Lean” on the choose goal screen

3. Choose “Advanced” on the choose level screen

4. Select the “Total Body Sculpting” workout

5. Select the “Review Workout” tab to view each exercise in the series

6. Then hit “Download” and you can start the workout when you are ready

Now although the workout is located in the advanced section of “Get Lean”, please DO NOT get intimated. Many of the exercises within the circuit can be modified to suit your comfort level. You can also chose to not utilize the free weights and medicine ball if you don’t have them at home. Prior to beginning this workout I highly recommend you select the “Review Workout” and understand how to execute each exercise in the series. If you are confused by an exercise, click on it and you will be taken to a step-by-step instruction via images. Need further clarification? There is also an option to watch a short video clip. Your virtual trainer will be sure to motivate you through audio feedback throughout the workout. Best of luck…and remember, the only workout you will regret, is the one you didn’t do!

The Return of the Power Suit in Spring/Summer 2014 Caitlin Power

Caitlin Power Skirt Suit

It’s been approximately twenty four years since Vogue declared the era of power dressing over…but based on trends seen in fashion over the last couple of seasons, the “Power Suit” is starting to make a return. The strong jackets that became iconic in the 80s with tailored pants or skirts is slowly being reinvented and updated to appeal to the young and middle aged women of today. The women’s power suit has taken many forms over the years and was formally characterized by masculine lines, oversized shoulder pads and boxy silhouettes, however fast forward to present day, this suit has become more sophisticated, sleek and sexy!

Caitlin Power New York Blazer

Caitlin Power Rome Skirt

I’ve always had an affinity to this particular style of dressing because it reminds me of my Mother’s “Boss Lady” attire during her magazine editorial days. She always that the most beautiful suits, most of the time custom from popular Little Italy boutique “Gente” that was uber popular in the 80s and closed down a decade later. Mum always exuded strength in her office attire and from a very young age I knew that it provided her with a sense of power. Ironically when it comes to Canadian designers, nobody does a power suit like Caitlin Power. Over the last several years, I have watched the designer grow and each season she never fails to blow me away with her creative use of leather and architectural details, “tailoring is important within the brand. I focus on sophisticated, classic silhouettes, but make them youthful with edgy details. I use leather in unexpected places and focus on the female form, making style lines accentuate a women’s curves. My woman commands attention and dresses sharp to receive it!” – says the Calgarian born designer.

My obsession with both Caitlin and her label reached an all time high after watching her Spring/Summer 2014 Collection at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto. Power’s fierce collection left show goers breathless at David Pecault Square as models traipsed down the runway in chic short and skirt suits, beautifully structured leather dresses and sharp tailored outerwear. This white skirt suit was a standout from the collection in my opinion and makes me think of Kim Cattrall’s character Samantha Jones on Sex and the City. The colour blocked blazer with plunging neckline and chic pencil skirt can be worn from work to evening events, with the former most likely paired with a cami (unless you work in the fashion industry).

Style in the City in 424 Fifth with Style Blogger Monica of AwedbyMoni

424 Fifth

Warm weather, sunshine, chic outfits and a day spent with my gal pal Monica Awe-Etuk of style blog Awed by Moni, pretty much sums up the perfect day for me. I’ve known this special lady for years but our bond grew stronger when we both entered the Blogsphere together roughly a year and a half ago. During her recent visit to Toronto, we headed to our fave stomping grounds in the city, Yorkville, for a proper girl’s day out in our rendition of “Ladies Who Lunch” attire.

After being introduced to 424 Fifth a couple months ago, I have been lucky enough to acquire some fabulous pieces from the brand’s Spring collection. In my opinion, one of the highlights of the line is this leather skirt that I paired with their grey Summer cashmere sweater. With a cheeky slit in the back, this form flattering skirt with laser cut details is the perfect update to the pencil skirt – not to mention a good juxtaposition to Monica’s beautiful tulle skirt. Guaranteed…it will be on repeat this season!

Weekend Wear | Oxford Shirt + Vintage Denim

Ann Taylor Striped Long Sleeve Shirt

There is something about a classic oxford button shirt that I have always been drawn to. About 7 years ago I begun to see the Olsen twins wearing them in unexpected ways; with leather pants, distressed denim and with vintage shorts and I immediately adopted several for my wardrobe. There are few qualities that help make the perfect oxford shirt in my opinion…1) quality fabric with a tiny bit of stretch for a flattering fit, 2) sleeves long enough to cover my lengthy arms and 3) machine washable – as I already spend enough money at the dry cleaners. All of the above can be found in Ann Taylor’s Striped oxford shirt.

Weekend flower market runs in the city calls for effortlessly chic look. I paired my shirt and vintage Levi’s with Ann Taylor’s nude bow pumps and crossbody bag. Not shown above, but the shirt has a shirttail hem, making it look put together even when it’s worn un-tucked.
