Midi Skirts and Crop Tops Are Always A Good Idea

424 Fifth Midi Skirt

My Mother always told me to show off my best assets, which I like to think are my legs, so for years I gravitated to skirts with short hemlines. After seeing the latest skirt trend all over the runway during fashion week I have finally been swayed from mini to midi skirts.

424 Fifth Midi Skirt

Longer than right-below-the-knee and shorter than a maxi, the versatile midi skirt is ultra ladylike and elegant. Always looking for a way to juxtapose my looks, I balanced this demure skirt from 424 Fifth’s Spring collection with the perfect cotton, long sleeved crop top and leather jacket. The key to keeping this look classy with a crop is to only allow a sliver of skin to be shown between the skirt and the shirt.

Green With Envy | What I’m Wearing

424 Fifth Ponte Dress

If you are still suffering from seasonal blues from what we will forever remember as the longest winter EVER…there is only one thing I can suggest to help bring you out of that funk – wear bright colours! I find that when I do, I have no other choice but to be in a happy mood.  This lime green shift dress from 424 Fifth was a non-negotiable and needed to be added to my wardrobe effective immediately.

424 Fifth

As we all know, accessories are supposed to enhance an outfit but I get stopped several times a day every time I leave the house with this bag. I think the beachscape  has women daydreaming of a wanderlust destination and because it’s oversized, you can fit literally every single essential you will need inside to take you from day to night. Loving the beachy vibes? Then you are in luck because 424 Fifth has made this a theme throughout their Spring collection and it can also be found in on a pencil skirt and 3/4 length sleeve topper.

Spring Essentials | Neutrals & The Perfect Trench

Ann Taylor Trench Coat

As I sulked all winter I spent quite a bit of time day dreaming about what I plan to wear next season once spring has arrived and now that it’s here (well…sort of), it’s time for me to start putting those plans into action. First on my list was to immediately ditch some of the black I have been habitually wearing since November because I have mourning the death of Summer 2013. For the first time  in what seems like forever, I’ve pulled together a look featuring a gorgeous subtle snakeskin midi skirt and sweater that plays up the neutral colours in the rest of the outfit and headed to my all-time favourite bake shop in the city PS by Pretty Sweet.

Plan B, get a classic trench, which I scored a few weeks ago from the Ann Taylor location at Yorkdale. This timeless, double breasted trench is part of the brand’s “A-List” essentials and has classic details and a stand-up collar, that I am sure will make anyone still look chic even in torrential downpour.

Nike Tight of the Moment (NTM) x Magical Kaleidoscope Collection

Nike Magical Kaleidoscope Tights

Nike has long been a leader in the athletic and performance apparel game but as of late, they have been taking over the fashion world little by little with their chic limited edition Silver and “Rose Gold” Fuel Bands and of course the Flyknit sneakers that style bloggers, editors and just about everyone in between has been rocking religiously. So it really shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the brand is looking to obtain notoriety in the fashion world with the announcement of their much anticipated street wear line with Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci (launching this Spring) and it’s latest fitness collabo, Nike “”Tight of the Moment” (NTM) designed by Japanese artist Yuko Kanatani.

Nike Magical Kaleidoscope Tights

Nike Magical Kaleidoscope Tights

It’s a well known fact that looking good in fitness apparel, plays an integral role in motivating people to exercise. I always want to look my best and I don’t think a crossfit gym, pilates/yoga studio or running should be an exception. An to be completely honest, an old Hanes tee and some oversized sweatpants really don’t entice me to want to go to a Spin class…you know what I mean? Nike’s “Tight of the Moment” project marks the first time the brand  has worked with an independent artist and celebrates the coming together of athleticism and artistic design, and in my opinion…they nailed it! “Performance is typically achieved through science, ” Yuko says. “But mood impacts performance as well, and since visuals influence one’s mood, I looked to create colourful and cheerful artwork! I wanted to lift the spirits, and thus the performance, of those wearing the tights.”

NTM x Magical Kaleidoscope Collection

In the coming months you can expect to see a fabulous collection of bright and colourful tights developed in conjunction with Kanatani. The first pair in the series, which I wore on my trip to Mexico City, is a beautiful kaleidoscope motif that the Tokyo based artist designed using a body map provided by the Nike Sport Research Lab. This body map uses athlete informed data to show the location of an individual’s muscles; in addition to heating and cooling zones. “At the beginning of the project, needing to match my drawings to a moving body was quite a hurdle…but it also was very inspiring and interesting to have outside direction and try something new.”

If this NTM x Magical Kaleidoscope collection doesn’t motivate you to keep on track with your fitness goals for 2014, I don’t know what else will. Nike obviously made this collection to be just as functional as it is fashionable by using their Soft Dri-FIT fabric to help us ladies stay comfy and dry while working our butts off. From what I hear, there are limited quantities available so you better act quickly. Both the Nike Pro Sports Bra and the Nike Pro Tight are available in store and on Nike.com

CMFR (Cold Manufactured Outerwear) Where Fashion Meets Function

CMFR Rowanwood Car Coat

Canada is known for it’s freezing cold temperatures during Winter, this year especially, so it should come as no surprise that this country makes the best outerwear to brave the season. At one time, The North Face dominated the outerwear market but in recent years Canada Goose and Moose Knuckles came on the scene with better designs and quality – but sometimes not always appropriate to wear when the occasion calls for something more dressy. However, CMFR, which stands for Cold Manufactured, understands that although the main goal for us Canadians between November and March is staying warm, we still want to look cute at the same time.

CMFR Rowanwood Car Coat

CMFR Rowanwood Car Coat

Founded by Toronto designer Mark Peros back in 2010, CMFR has created seven signature styles for both men and women using only the finest of materials featuring; leather patchwork details, Aussie sheepskin, Canadian coyote, fox fur and mink; 550+ fill power, in addition to heavy-duty waterproof and cold resistant zippers. With a car coat, 3/4 length parkas and bombers available in both classic and leather, there’s literally a jacket to fit every fashion and functional need. Although CMFR has plenty of down-filled options to ensure intense warmth, they also have a non-down version, like the one I’m wearing, with Canadian silver fox fur – which can also be worn in Spring and Fall. And just in case you need anymore convincing about the brand’s superior quality, in 2013 Porter Airlines chose CMFR as their outerwear provider and they are also the official coat of the Northwest Territories and TSN (The Sports Network).

BAZZUL 2014 Ready-to-Wear Collection

SS14 Bazzul Blue Mini Raglan 5

Isn’t every woman’s dream to find that perfect dress that accentuates all their assets, conceals flaws and creates a figure flattering shape? Yes I know that sounds like the fashion holy grail but I found out a few weeks ago that it does actually exist…in the form of Bazzul’s Ready-to-Wear collection. BAZZUL, a Canadian label created by Toronto based designer Felicia Burke, has been kicking around for a couple of years but the focus has gone from one-of-a-kind custom pieces, then transitioned to denim before finding it’s sweet spot in making sleek and stylish dresses that not only caters to a wide variety of personal styles but are also appealing on different body types.

SS14 Bazzul black ong raglan

I got a chance to meet Burke in her Toronto design studio during fashion week and I fell in love with both her and the collection immediately. Remember that uber cool chick in high school that all the girls wanted to be and all the boys wanted to be with – well yeah, that’s quintessentially Felicia! The sexy strategic cut-outs, the tasteful slits and the fact that each one fits a woman’s body like the clothing equivalent of Spanx quickly put BAZZUL on my radar.

SS14 Bazzul Taupe reversible

The range of classic silhouettes come in some gorge colours such as; pink (not picutred), taupe, and cerulean (also known as blue for those who never watched The Devil Wears Prada). If breaking away from “Basic Black” gives you some anxiety, Burke will give you encouragement to experiment because majority of her pieces are 100% reversible, so you can still more or less get your fave style in black and another colour of your choice for the price of one *feel free to pick your mouth up from the floor* Oh…and did I forget to mention the material doesn’t require the garments to be dry cleaned or ironed and is super easy to pack into the smallest of travel bags for a quick trip…honestly, I think writing this post has convinced me to purchase one in every colour imaginable. You can browse and buy pieces from the current BAZZUL 2013 collection  now on www.shoppalu.com and www.bazzul.com.

Ani + Wren | Toronto’s Chic Lifestyle and Maternity Boutique

Ani + Wren

This may come across as extremely shallow but the thought of having to wear nothing but Lululemon joggers during a pregnancy makes me more nauseous than first trimester morning sickness. I cannot even count how many girlfriends I have who struggled to maintain their style while being preggers – not to mention the countless designer jeans they cut the tops off of to sew in an elasticized waistband, just to be able to still rock their fave skinny jeans.

Ani + Wren

Thankfully sister-in-laws Lani and Lauren Levy has been so kind as to open a fabulous lifestyle and clothing boutique in the heart of Rosedale with some pretty dope contemporary brand that have been carefully curated so that women can actually wear these pieces before, during and post pregnancy – how brilliant is that? Similar to most genius ideas, this concept was born after Lauren (Wren) struggled to find clothes that reflected her personal style aesthetic with her growing baby bump. With the sissy’s winning combination of Business/Commerce and Apparel Buying backgrounds and superb store location, there is no doubt in my mind that Ani + Wren is going to be a huge success.

With brands like 360 Sweater, Anniel, DL1961, DVF, Enza Costa, JBrand, Paige, Rebecca Minkoff and Vince (just to name a few), it makes it easy peasy for women in different stages of pregnancy and different styles to shop in the boutique . And let me be frank…I love the idea that I can also find stuff for myself while out shopping with my preggo gal pals.

Ani + Wren is located at 1172 Yonge Street Toronto, ON. 416.944.1260 www.aniandwren.com

Geometric Graphics| What I’m Wearing

Ann Taylor Bold Geometric Print Shift Dress

I love a good shift dress…it has to be the easiest look to put together when I’m pinched for time, it transitions well from day to night and pretty much a apropos for any occasion. This graphic one from Ann Taylor is chic, works on various body types, extremely comfortable  and not at all restricting like other shift dresses can be.

If you’re obsessed with black and white like I am then buckle up babes because I have discovered that majority of  Ann Taylor’s Pre-Holiday collection will be exactly that and I will let you in on a little secret, do not sleep on the pre-holiday line. You will find some great cashmere pieces, a fashion forward high-waisted B&W skirt (you may have seen on my Instagram account), more structured blazers, gorge statement jewelry and accessories, which have been slowly rolling into the stores, but have not yet appeared online. Something tells me they won’t be available long, so if you’re in the GTA area, stop by the city’s largest Ann Taylor location at Yorkdale Mall.

Sweater + Leather Weather | What I’m Wearing

The only upside to dropping temperatures this month is being able to wear leather without sweating like a cornered nun. During my past jaunts across the pond to London town, one of my go-to high street retailers is none other than All Saints, clearly because of their selection of leather – which may I add are priced quite reasonably. The iconic Brit brand made its way this side of the Atlantic earlier this summer, which has been great for its North American loyal fans, but not so great for my wallet. One of my first in store purchases in Toronto was this classic moto lambskin leather pant.

At the beginning of every Fall/Winter season I go on the hunt for the perfect sweater, which I end up up wearing religiously, like it’s my job…and then it becomes totally unwearable the following season. With arms as long as a monkey and an equally long torso, finding the right one is not an easy task. This fab, marled mix cardi from Ann Taylor has a rich textured wool mix, a ginormous fold-over collar, extra long sleeves and functional pockets.  Just a heads-up, you can totally expect to see this repeated (without shame) over and over again on Instagram and Twitter!
